Is falling asleep, or staying asleep, something that you find difficult and frustrating? Do you often find yourself so tired you can hardly keep your eyes open, yet when you hop into bed you just can’t switch off and settle into a restful slumber?

Prior to discovering essential oils this was my regular sleep pattern, often so tired physically and mentally, yet when my head hit the pillow my mind would start to tick over – worrying about my family, what I had to do tomorrow, or what I didn’t get through that day. Eventually I would fall asleep, only to find the slightest noise would awaken me and again allow the cycle of worry and overthinking to take hold. This would continue throughout the night and when the alarm would sound the next morning I would slowly awaken feeling anything but refreshed and re energised.

Lack of good quality sleep has a negative impact on our health and can lead to fatigue, short temper, irritability and lack of focus. Our sleep is designed to allow our body to rest, rejuvenate, heal itself and restore its chemical balance.

One huge benefit of essential oils includes the impact they can have on sleep in a natural, balanced way. Combined with a healthy bedtime ritual, essential oils can help to naturally support you in a restful, quality sleep.

My favorite essential oil bedtime routine is using the oils both topically and aromatically. Each night after showering I will apply 3 drops of Lavender Peace with some fractionated coconut oil as my nightly moisturiser. Lavender Peace is a relaxing blend of essential oils that will help you to unwind, relax and will calm and soothe the emotions at the end of a stressful or busy day.

In the diffuser I will add 2 drops each of Lavender Peace, Vetiver and Peace essential oil. Vetiver is a beautiful, earthy, essential oil that is well known for its ability to calm a busy mind. Perfect for those that find themselves overthinking when they hop into bed. Peace essential oil is beneficial for those that are suffering from anxious feelings and will help to reassure and promote a restful sleep.

I also keep a Signature Sleep Blend roller next to my bed and apply this blend to my wrists, nape of neck and across forehead as I prepare for sleep. If I find myself awake through the night I can reapply the oils to lull me back to sleep. If you are familiar with breathing meditation techniques to help you sleep, I also find it beneficial to apply a small amount to the tip of my nose and across my top lip. This allows me to focus on the aroma as I am falling asleep.
